Entrance To The dawn – Buriram’s Phanom Rung Prepares To Shine Once Again

As Thailand celebrates the ‘2015 Discover Thainess’ year and highlights 12 concealed gems, or provinces that are renowned for their special history, culture and way of living, I am delighted to have been to a few of them, consisting of Buriram where I had the possibility to experience the enchanting moment when the sun shined through the doorway of 11th Century Prasat Hin Phanom Rung temple.

It was unseasonably cold, even chilly at the top of the volcano. A crowd of people had collected, but in the pitch darkness you heard, rather than saw them. Even so, their chatter was suppressed, nearly worried. Hardly unusual– we ‘d took a trip a long way and had actually stayed awake all night for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

For 40 minutes, we stood patiently but as the eastern skies gradually took on the orange-pink tone of dawn, a voice wept out “It’s starting”. At as soon as there was a quiet scramble to discover the very best position. I unashamedly used my western bulk to guarantee I had a good view, then like everybody else, I waited.

We were all dealing with the elaborately sculpted portico of an ancient temple; its information masked by the darkness. Beyond the door, down a long corridor a red glow was newing– the sun was increasing.

The look of the sun through the 15 porticos of Buriram‘s 11th Century Prasat Hin Phanom Rung temple, on the 15th day of the fifth lunar month is no freak event. The ancient Khmer architects integrated their understanding of the heavens when they constructed this sensational sanctuary atop an extinct volcano. And, if it’s not cloudy, on 3-5 April this year, you can see it for yourselves.

Prasat Hin Phanom Rung is in fact worth seeing at any time of year. The temple, integrated the 10th to 13th centuries, is among the finest preserved on the planet.

The centerpiece is the major prang representing Mount Kailisaa. But my favorite element is the reclining Shiva lintel previously the eastern entryway. Visitors are fortunate to be able to see it– it was stolen and went missing for nearly 20 years before being returned in 1988.

For a feeling of ceremony and magnificence, technique by means of the 160 meter pathway made from laterite slabs bordered by big stylized lotus blossoms and ends with gigantic steps in five terraces guarded by magnificent ancient nagas, that ubiquitous spirit lord of Southeast Asia.

Yearly, when the dawn shows through the porticos, there is a magnificent parade down the pathway and a night show that tells the story of the temple with lights, beautiful dancers, effective kings and warriors. Even if you do not speak Thai, it’s fascinating theater. How could it not be? The phase alone is 1,000 years of ages and lines up with the very heavens!

Information & Tips:

Buriram is 380 kilometers from Bangkok and can be reached by rail, bus or road. If you wish to see the dawn, it’s finest to remain in the nearby town of Nang Rong where there is a range of cottage.
